July 11, 2008, 5:00 PM - 8:45 PM,

On Friday nights the entire museum is open until 8:45 p.m. Friday Nights at the de Young offers a variety of interdisciplinary arts programs, including live music, poetry, films, dance, tours, and lectures. The cafe is open with a special Friday Nights dinner menus, and a no-host cocktail bar is serving drinks. There are art-making activities for everyone.

In the Galleries
6:00–8:00 p.m.
New Barbarians at the de Young
, a de Young–commissioned performance piece by La Pocha Nostra’s Guillermo Gómez-Peña, Roberto Sifuentes, Violeta Luna, and Michele Ceballos

La Pocha Nostra intervenes in the permanent collections of the de Young with five powerful performance art pieces. These live art pieces will explore the decorated human body as cultural artifact. The personas on display will be contemporary and live versions of the collection’s iconography, echoing the narrative of the exhibit and creating surprising juxtapositions. The audience is invited to wander through the museum and discover the five ”living dioramas,” each located in a different gallery. Later on, audience members will get to take their photo with their favorite “human artifact.”

In Wilsey Court
7:15–8:30 p.m.
Pleasuremaker
-Pleasuremaker is an amalgamation of breakbeats, soul/funk, Afro-beat, disco-house, and Afro-Latin. Bringing these influences together, the original Pleasuremaker sound is not instantly definable. The live shows mix the tightness and seamless mixing of a DJ with the live energy and spontaneity of a live band. Every time Pleasuremaker takes the stage, a party ensues and the dance floor is in full effect.
